Two Rift Valley lakes, one easy weekend
This short circuit gives you two very different Rift Valley experiences back to back. Day one is classic game viewing in Lake Nakuru, with rhino and flamingos. Day two moves to freshwater Naivasha for a boat ride among hippo pods and a walking safari on Crescent Island.
Because there are no big predators on Crescent Island you walk on foot among giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, which most visitors rate the highlight of the trip.
It is a comfortable weekend from Nakuru or Nairobi and works well as a first safari.
Pick-up and morning entry to Lake Nakuru National Park. Game drive through the acacia woodland and lakeshore searching for black and white rhino, Rothschild giraffe, lion and buffalo. Picnic lunch in the park, then Baboon Cliff for the panorama before checking into your lodge.
After breakfast, drive to Lake Naivasha for a one hour boat ride among the hippo pods and fish eagles. Continue by boat to Crescent Island for a guided walking safari among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala. Late lunch, then return to Nakuru or Nairobi.
We did the two day Nakuru and Naivasha trip as a family and it was perfectly organised from pick up to drop off. Our guide spotted a white rhino within twenty minutes of entering the park. The kids are still talking about walking with the giraffes on Crescent Island.
